Walk-In Combo Boxes

A combination walk-in box puts a cooler and a freezer inside a single insulated shell with a shared partition wall. For most convenience stores and travel centres it is the more sensible buy than two separate boxes, and the reason is floor area: two standalone boxes need their own walls, their own clearances and their own service access, while a combo shares one wall and one footprint.

When a combo box is the right call

Specify a combo when you need frozen and refrigerated holding but do not have the back-of-house area for two boxes, which is the normal situation in a c-store remodel. It also suits sites where the frozen volume is genuinely smaller than the refrigerated volume — the partition can be set to give you, say, a third freezer and two thirds cooler, rather than forcing you into two equal boxes.

Two separate boxes remain the better answer when the two loads are both large, when you want to be able to shut one down for service without touching the other, or when the freezer needs to sit somewhere structurally different from the cooler.

What actually drives the specification

The partition wall carries a temperature difference of roughly seventy degrees, so its insulation matters more than any other panel in the box. So does the floor detail on the freezer side: a freezer floor sitting directly on an uninsulated slab will pull heat out of the ground and, in colder regions, can heave the slab over time.

Door placement is the decision owners most often regret. Each side needs its own door, and the freezer door needs enough swing clearance for a loaded cart without opening into the cooler traffic path. Get the aisle sorted on the floor plan before the box is ordered — moving a door afterwards means a new panel.

Refrigeration is normally two systems, not one, because the cooler and freezer hold very different temperatures. That means two condensing units, two sets of controls, and enough electrical service for both. Confirm available service capacity early; on remodels it is a common source of late change orders.

Sizing

Combo boxes are built to order, and the split between cooler and freezer is set when the box is built rather than adjusted later. Work back from what you need to hold at peak, not average — a box sized on average weekly volume will be short every delivery day.
