What makes a glass-door box different

A glass-door walk-in is a merchandising fixture that happens to be refrigerated. That single fact changes almost every specification decision relative to a solid-door food service box, and it is why the two should never be quoted from the same sheet.

Glass carries far more heat than an insulated panel, so a run of display doors raises the refrigeration load well above an equivalent solid-wall box of the same volume. Size the condensing unit against the door count, not the floor area. This is the single most common error on beer cave and cold vault projects specified by someone treating the box as storage.

Doors, and the cost of getting the count wrong

Door count is set at build and is expensive to change afterwards, because each door is a structural opening in the panel run. Work it back from facings: how many SKUs need to face the aisle at peak, not on an average Tuesday. Under-doored cold vaults are the most common regret in c-store remodels, and the fix is a new panel wall rather than an adjustment.

Anti-condensate heaters are what keep the glass clear enough to sell through. They are also a continuous electrical load, and in humid regions they run close to permanently on a fixed schedule. Specify dew-point-responsive control rather than a timer — it is one of the few upgrades on a cold vault that pays back on the power bill alone, and it matters far more in the Gulf states than in the high desert.

Merchandising decisions that belong on the floor plan

Interior lighting, shelf pitch and the reach-in depth all determine whether the vault sells. LED strips inside the door frame light product rather than the aisle; shelf pitch set for the tallest SKU wastes a facing on every other one. Stocking access is the other half — a cold vault loaded from the front ties up an employee in the customer's way at peak, so where the back-of-house allows it, a walk-in rear-load layout is worth the extra footprint.
