A real equipment package is specified from your floor plan, menu and sales volume, with model numbers, quantities and the power, plumbing and refrigeration each item needs. Hood and fire-suppression requirements are set by your local code official.

How to use the list

The list shows the categories of equipment a store with your program typically needs. Use it to check nothing is missing from a budget, to compare two equipment quotes line by line, or to brief a designer. Our complete equipment list guide explains each category in more detail.

From list to package

A list is not a package. A real equipment package is specified from the floor plan: each item gets a model, a size, a quantity and a location, and the electrical, plumbing and refrigeration drawings are produced from it. That is what makes the equipment fit the building on installation day. See equipment package process and design-build vs. buying equipment online.

The items that shape the building

Some equipment decides more than its own cost:

  • Walk-ins and the cooler wall set the back wall and the stockroom.
  • A Type 1 hood sets the kitchen's position, because exhaust has to leave the building.
  • Sinks and ice machines need drains, so they set plumbing runs.
  • Cooking and refrigeration together set the electrical service size.

Plan these first. The rest of the list fits around them.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does a convenience store need?
At minimum: a walk-in cooler with glass doors, an ice machine, coffee equipment, gondola shelving, a checkout counter and point-of-sale. Food service, fuel, beer and a beer cave each add their own equipment. The builder above lists what each choice adds.
Does the list include prices?
No. Prices depend on size, brand, quantity and installation. For budgets, see the cost of convenience store equipment guide and the budget estimator.
Why are some items marked 'by others'?
Point-of-sale, fuel systems and plumbing items like grease interceptors are normally supplied by other vendors or trades, not in a store equipment package. They still need to be planned into the layout.
