The values below are examples. Replace them with your own quotes and projections.
Ignores financing costs, taxes, waste beyond what your margin already reflects, and any lift in other sales from food customers.
Why run the numbers
Food is the biggest margin lever in a convenience store. NACS reports that in 2025 foodservice was 28.5% of in-store sales and 38.9% of in-store gross profit. But food also adds equipment, building work, labor and waste, and the economics differ store by store. This calculator lets you test your own numbers before committing.
How the calculator works
- Added gross profit = added daily food sales × food gross margin × days open.
- Net added profit = added gross profit − added labor − other added monthly costs.
- Payback = upfront cost ÷ net added profit per month.
The default values are only examples. Replace every one with your own quotes and projections.
Getting better inputs
- Upfront cost: a quote for the food-service package and the building work it needs. See food service build-outs.
- Sales: your traffic and the share you expect to buy food. Franchisors usually provide sales data for their programs.
- Margin and waste: from your food suppliers and menu costing.
- Labor: the added hours your food program needs, at your wage rate.
