Fuel Brand Conversions & Convenience Store Re-Imaging

A brand change is the best moment to fix the inside of the store. We redesign the interior to the new brand's standard, replace what needs replacing and install it.

Quick answer

A fuel brand conversion changes the canopy and the dispensers, but the brand's image program usually reaches inside the store as well. JayComp redesigns the interior to the new standard: floor plan, cooler wall, shelving, counters, color and graphics. Then we install the equipment. The canopy, dispensers and fuel systems stay with your fuel-system contractor and the brand's imaging vendors.

Owners change fuel brands for supply terms, incentives or because the old brand no longer fits the market. The outside of the store changes on a schedule the brand sets: new canopy fascia, new dispensers or dispenser graphics, new price sign. The inside is where the owner has room to make real gains. A store that looks new outside and twenty years old inside sends a mixed message at the door.

What a conversion usually touches inside the store

AreaTypical work
Color and graphicsNew interior color scheme, category signage and brand graphics
CheckoutNew counter, back bar and tobacco or lottery fixtures
Cooler wallNew display doors, or a replacement walk-in if the box is failing
ShelvingGondolas reconfigured or replaced to the new finish standard
Food serviceOften added or expanded at the same time
Lighting and flooringCommonly refreshed with the graphics

Brands vary widely in how much of this their image program requires. Get the interior standards from your brand representative early, because they set the scope and the budget.

Keep, replace or redesign

A conversion is a good time to ask whether the layout itself still works. If the store has added food service, a beer cave or a bigger cooler wall over the years, the floor may no longer flow. We measure what is there and decide, item by item, what to keep:

  • Usually kept: shelving and cabinets that fit the new layout and finish, structural walls, working walk-in boxes.
  • Usually replaced: refrigeration near the end of its life, worn counters, display doors that are fogging or failing.
  • Usually redesigned: checkout position, food-service area and the path to the cooler wall.

For a fuller look at that decision, see remodel vs. new build.

What we do and what the brand's vendors do

We design and install the store interior and its equipment: the floor plan, equipment package, electrical and refrigeration layouts, cabinets and shelving, and color and graphics. Canopy fascia, dispenser graphics, price signs and fuel systems are handled by the brand's approved vendors and your fuel-system contractor. We plan our work so it fits around theirs.

Converting more than one store

If you are converting several stores to the same brand, design the interior standard once and apply it to each one. See store programs for fuel marketers and multi-store rollouts.

Our work

Our remodel projects include Allen Quick Pick in Allen, Oklahoma, where the owners asked us to make the store "modern" and we redesigned it with an updated sales floor, lighting, flooring, cabinets and shelving, and Majestic Rusk, an existing store redesigned to open up the space. See them on the projects page.

Send us the store address, the new brand and its interior standards if you have them, and your conversion date. We will tell you what the interior needs and what a design would cover.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fuel brand change require an interior remodel?
It depends on the brand and your supply agreement. Many brand programs set interior image standards as well as exterior ones, and some offer incentives tied to completing an image upgrade. Ask your brand representative for the interior standards before design starts.
Can I keep my existing coolers and shelving?
Often, yes. Shelving and cabinets can transfer if they fit the new layout and finish standard. Refrigeration near the end of its life usually is not worth keeping, so it is judged on age and condition.
Do you install canopy fascia and dispenser graphics?
No. Exterior fuel imaging is normally handled by the brand's approved imaging vendors. We design and install the store interior and its equipment.
Can the store stay open during the conversion?
That depends on how much changes and on the order of work, and it is one of the first things we plan with you. Tell us what has to stay trading and we will plan the work around it.
