Store Design Programs for Fuel Jobbers & Marketers

Fuel marketers need stores that sell more than fuel and can be built again on the next site. We design the store, the equipment package and the graphics as a standard you can repeat.

Quick answer

A fuel jobber or marketer gets the most from design-build when the first store becomes a standard: one floor plan family, one equipment package and one graphics package, adapted to each lot. JayComp designs the store and equipment package, then delivers and installs the equipment on each site. Fuel systems, tanks and canopies remain with your fuel-system contractors.

For most fuel marketers, the store is where the margin is. Fuel brings the customer onto the lot; the cooler wall, the coffee and the food decide whether the stop is profitable. A marketer with ten or fifty sites also has a second problem: every store that is designed from scratch costs time and money that a repeatable design would save.

What a store program gives you

A store program is a set of design decisions you make once and reuse:

  • A floor plan family. One core layout in two or three sizes, so it fits small-town lots and highway sites.
  • A standard equipment package. The same coolers, display doors, shelving, counters and food-service equipment on every site, so purchasing, training and maintenance are simpler.
  • A graphics package. Interior color and graphics built to your brand or the fuel brand you carry.
  • Site adaptation. Each new lot gets the standard plan adjusted to its building, utilities and access.

The first store takes the full design effort. Each store after that starts from a proven plan.

Company sites, dealer sites and remodels

Marketers rarely build only new stores. A program usually covers three kinds of work:

Site typeWhat changes
New company storeFull design to the standard
Dealer storeStandard plan, with approval and cost split per your dealer agreement
Existing store being re-imagedRemodel to the standard around the building that is there

For older stores, see remodel vs. new build and fuel brand conversions.

What we design, and what we don't

We design the store building and its equipment: floor plan, equipment package, framing, electrical and refrigeration layouts, cabinets and shelving, color and graphics. Then we deliver and install the equipment.

We do not design fuel systems, tanks, dispensers or canopies. Those belong with your fuel-system engineers and contractors. We plan the store so it works with their site plan, and our gas station site planning guide covers what that package includes.

Equipment we carry

We install the lines we carry directly: Heatcraft and Russell refrigeration, Anthony and Styleline display doors, Madix shelving and Hussmann cases. A standard package built on lines we install means the same equipment, the same parts and the same installer on every site.

Our work

Our project pages include stores for fuel companies such as Shepherd Oil, a convenience store designed from the ground up, and Parks Fuel. See them on the projects page.

To start a program, send us your site list, which sites are new builds and which are remodels, and the fuel brand or brands you carry. We will tell you how a standard would work across them. For larger programs, see multi-store rollouts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you design stores for our dealer sites as well as company-operated ones?
Yes. The design work is the same. On dealer sites, tell us who approves the plan and who pays for which equipment so the package and quote are split the way your agreement works.
Do you handle fuel systems or canopies?
No. We design the store building and its equipment. Tanks, dispensers, piping and canopies are engineered and installed by fuel-system specialists, and we plan the store around their site plan.
Can the store carry our fuel brand's image?
Yes. Color and graphics is one of the eight steps on every project. Give us the brand's image standards and we design the interior to them. See fuel brand conversions.
How does pricing work across several sites?
Design work done once is reused on every site after the first, so later stores need less new design work. Equipment is quoted per site from each site's equipment schedule.
